Porthcurno became an unlikely hub for high-tech global communications in 1870 when pioneering engineers laid thousands of miles of undersea cables from the remote sandy beach to Bombay, India. Porthcurno became vital to Britain’s communications across the Empire and beyond, and Porthcurno became home to the world’s largest telegraph cable station.

During World War 2, the telegraph station was moved underground into Porthcurno’s secret tunnels, protecting it from attack. Today, these tunnels house an award-winning museum where visitors can experience the sights and sounds of a working telegraph station and learn about learn about life in the valley during wartime. Secret escape steps take visitors to the viewing platform high above Porthcurno valley.

Handling objects and interactive exhibits provide wow factor, and bring the science of communication to life. Visitors can send coded messages across the galleries, and explore the historic online archive.Family activities, dressing up, interactive exhibits and demonstrations are available every day. Our ‘make & take’ activities allow visitors of all ages to get creative and take home a memento of their visit.
